Chidambaram (literally Chit = Consciousness, Ambaram = Sky / Space) represents the supreme sky of pure consciousness. According to ancient Vedic cosmology, this sacred spot is the center of the earth's magnetic equator and corresponds to the heart lotus (Anahata Chakra) of the cosmic Virat Purusha.
Here, Lord Shiva danced the cosmic dance of bliss — Ananda Tandavam — to grant Darshan to the great sages Patanjali (the incarnation of Adisesha) and Vyaghrapada (the tiger-footed rishi).

Lord Shiva manifests through the five primal elements of nature. Chidambaram is the crown jewel representing the subtlest element: Akasa (Ether/Space).

In the sanctum next to Lord Nataraja is the Chidambara Rahasyam. A curtain made of rich velvet is drawn across this chamber, symbolizing the veil of Maya (ignorance and illusion) that conceals the absolute truth from the human mind.
When the Dikshitar priest pulls aside the curtain during the sacred arati, devotees behold an empty space. There is no idol, stone, or physical representation. Hanging in this void is a magnificent garland of Golden Vilva leaves (Swarna Vilva Mala).
The secret is that the Supreme Godhead is not bound by form, attributes, or names — Shiva is the boundless, eternal, luminous Space of Consciousness (Chidakasha). Realizing this truth within oneself grants immediate liberation.
Built by the illustrious Chola monarchs, the golden roof (Porkoorai) of Kanaka Sabha is a physical representation of the human body and the cosmic anatomy.
The golden roof is clad with exactly 21,600 gold plates. This precisely represents the 21,600 respirations (breaths) that a human being takes every 24 hours (Soham mantra).
The gold plates are fastened with exactly 72,000 gold nails. According to Yogic science, this matches the 72,000 energy channels (Nadis) circulating through the human nervous system.
Crowning the ridge of the roof are 9 pure gold Kalashas (vessels), symbolizing the nine manifestations of Shakti (Navashaktis) presiding over the universe.

The hereditary custodians of the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple are the Podu Dikshitars, also known as Tillai Vaazh Andanar. They were brought from Mount Kailasa by Lord Shiva Himself. When counted, only 2,999 were present — Lord Nataraja then declared, "I am the 3,000th Dikshitar amongst you!"
